Week 10: Intellectual Property

What do students need to know about publishing their work, and how can it be incorporated into the K-12 curriculum? Intellectual property is actually a topic I was quite interested in learning more about since the beginning of this course because it is something I deal with daily as a classroom teacher. We teach our students from early on that plagiarism is not okay, but I find that they rarely have any idea about copyright laws. They take images from google without a hint of concern and are surprised when they are asked to use royalty free images, most students don’t have any concept of what these are. As teachers who use technology, how can we stress the responsibility that comes with students taking control of their learning and not lessen their Sense of Self? “In Albert Bandura’s thorough examination of self-efficacy, he defined the concept as a person’s beliefs about his/her abilities to complete specific actions” (Vilkas & McCabe, 2014). As we have shifted quickly from traditional education to online and hybrid models, students are being thrust into new challenges every day. As teachers, working with and through technology, it is important that we promote student self-efficacy. Week 2: Ethical Challenges

Essential Question: What are the primary ethical challenges for teachers in today's world? From my perspective, the main ethical issues with using technology faced by teachers today are technology equity, copyright issues, and attempting to provide face-to-face instruction and distance instruction with the constraints of privacy. These three issues have been magnified over the last few months since the pandemic has school looking so much different than it has in the past. According to an article published by Northwestern Missouri State University (2018), “Many students begin playing with a device before entering elementary school. Every student's experience with using the technology and the internet differs.” So as students enter our classrooms, their technology playing field is already uneven.
